Halcyon Signs Complete the Signage project for MOSI The Manchester Museum of Science and Industry, Manchester City Centre.

Halcyon signs Ltd, sign makers, based in Manchester have been established for 6 years and in that time have grown to be a recognised as a professional sign making company in Manchester, who's bespoke sign making is second to none. Our customer portfolio includes companies such as Barnardos, Manchester City Council, Salford Council, CLS Care Homes, Seddons Construction, Gaucho, Britax and various blue chip companies. We cover the whole of the UK and Europe. We dont employ sales staff, the person who is the initial contact for our clients will see the project through to the very end, including the installation. This theory has been a great success for us and along with 5 other companies Halcyon Signs were invited to make an assessment of the site and come up with some plans and drawings of what we thought would be the right signs for MOSI's needs. MOSI were thrilled with the plans and gave the order to Halcyon Signs, with one slight twist. They had an open night 17 days later which was going to be attended by the Mayor of Manchester and various other VIP guests, the signs needed to be completed by then. This was a mammoth task. 25+ signs, all in Marine grade stainless steel with routed out panels and lit from within and over 100 metres of contravision. This meant 24 hour days for Halcyons staff.

The look the museum was after was an industrial feel with a modern design, but it also had to be practical for the public to make their way around this huge site.

From the very first meeting Halcyon signs advised on where they thought the signs should be, the size the signs should be and how the signs would be fitted. Another spanner in the works is that the MOSI site is Grade 1 and 2 listed, which means we couldn't just whack a bolt where we thought would be best. Each screw, bolt, nut and plug had to be fitted in certain places as to not affect the existing brick, cobble or wood work. One of the main buildings we were working on is named the station building, this part of the site is the worlds first ever passenger Railway station and was built back in the early 1800's. This building was going to be home to the largest of the signs we were making. A triple sided fully illuminating 7ft stainless steel directional sign. This was to be fitted into the path of the original cobble station walk way. With the sign being over 4ft diameter at the bottom we had to remove several cobbles, lift the sign into place and then place each cobble back into its original space. At one point work had to come to a halt whilst an exact replica of the Stephenson's "Planet", which is the first ever passenger train came out of its usual home in the Power Hall part of the site and needed to be turned around at the point where we were fitting the new sign, to be put on show for the open evening. That was a first for us and I'm sure that's never happened to any other sign makers whilst out fitting.

Each sign made was totally bespoke due to the surroundings of the museum. Steve Thompson Owner of the business and also designer of the signs had many sleepless nights wondering how to make the signs fit to the requirements needed. " Some nights I would wake up at a ridiculous hour with an idea of how the sign could look, so I would get dressed and head straight down to our design office and put my idea onto screen and then make a prototype. It was trial and error due to the complexity of the task, but in the end I was more than pleased with the results and so were the museum".

From start to finish the MOSI project was a test of the skills and initiative of the Halcyon Signs team. But every obstacle threw in our way, from grade 1 listed buildings to the filming of the BBC's Doctor Who, whilst we were fitting contravision in the background 40 ft off the ground. Not to mention the freezing Manchester temperatures in December. Halcyon Signs delivered the industrial feel, practical, modern looking directional signs MOSI we're after ON TIME and to an impeccable standard.

Gone is the purple and grey, in comes the orange and errr! grey.

We decided our old website which was made by Dean Hoyte, had served us well for the last 6 years and it was time for an upgrade.

We took this opertunity also to re-design our logo and change the colour branding from the purple and light grey, to a vivid orange and a dark grey, whilst still maintaining the subtle light grey.

In the new logo we have kept it simple "thats who we are, and thats what we do. With the help of Chris Walsh at LOOFY.COM we were able to put our ideas into practice and create the website. we are please with the results and hope you are too.

Your Feed back is much appriciated.

We are now in a position to increse our work load and offer more business` our services. We see the exhibition as a great way of showing potential clients who have not found us, what we can do.

The inaugural event in November 2006 saw 150 companies and 4000 visitors descend upon the G-Mex centre (now Manchester Central) for two full days of networking, education, innovation and face to face business.

This years event is now being organised by Nationwide Exhibitions Ltd, one of the UK's most established and longest running exhibition Companies and has rebranded the event as Business North West.

The event will again incorporate the BEX conference and will continue to attract some of the country's leading business experts and entrepreneurs covering the key topics which affect today's growing businesses.

The Greater Manchester Chamber of Commerce and the Manchester City Council are also major partners of the event ensuring that the North West has a platform to showcase itself and promote Manchester and the North West as the UK's number one business region.

This unique event provides visitors with a central point for sourcing information, advice and inspiration and an opportunity to find new suppliers and concepts through an extensive exhibition and seminar programme.

Business North West offers a unique opportunity to come face-to-face with this key audience, which is notoriously difficult to reach via traditional marketing channels.

Halcyon invite existing and new clients to the exhibition to visit us and take advantage of business information and seminars that will take place. To register for the show Call us 0161 202 2525 or visit the exhibition website. www.businessnorthwest.co.uk.
